The Truth About Older (50+) Salespeople

Steve Martin shares an interesting view about hiring candidates over the age of 50. “It is hard times for salespeople (and sales managers) over 50 today. As companies downsize, they find themselves five times more likely to be let go when compared to their younger counterparts. They also have a more difficult time finding new jobs because younger sales managers have five basic fears about hiring someone older than themselves.”

  1. I agree that it is more difficult for a person over 50 to be hired as a salsman or sales manager. However, if people would give consideration to the over 50 crowd I’m confident that the benefits they wold find would out way the risks.

    A few of the benefits are:

    1) the over 50 group more often than not show up everyday, on time.
    2 ) the over 50 group is less swayed by emotions, therefore can usually make better rational decisions.
    3) experience gives perspective, particularly in difficult times.
    4) the over 50 group because of life experiences tend to be more understanding.

    I could go on but this is a good example of the benefits of hiring people over 50.
